What to do in Virpazar in National park Skadar lake

Virpazar history

Vir was first mentioned in 1242 and in the 15th century it was capitalized by the Turks who built the Besac castle above the village.  At the beginning of the 18th century Virpazar became the most important trading center in Montenegro. Because of this trading role, the word Pazar (market) has been added to Vir, forming name Virpazar.

Virpazar is known as a village situated on three bridges.  After crossing the main bridge which has been reconstructed recently, there are rock stands and on top of them is a memorable monument of the 13th of July Uprising – Italian occupation.

After the bridge, the road will lead you to the Besac castle which was built by the Turks in 1478.

From this fortification, you can enjoy view of Virpazar and surrounding smaller villages. Recently on this place there is a restaurant. Thus, if you go to restaurant, entrance is free, otherwise you need to pay for entrance.

Friday Market

From the early days, local people used to sell home made products such as wine, grapes, cheese and many vegetables and fruits from their garden. The main local day is still Friday. Beside food, on the market in Virpazar, you can find few stands with different souvenirs.

Virpazar is the most visited from May to October. This famous and fairy village on Skadar lake is the main transit station for cruising along the largest lake. If you want to explore Skadar lake by boat, kayak or bicycle, there are many providers for these tours.

Virpazar is very well connected with other cities. From Bar or Podgorica you will need only 30 minutes by car, bus or train. Virpazar city center is only 10 minutes walking from the train station and 2 minutes walking from bus stop. Train costs 1,2 euros one way, and bus 3-3,5 euros on way.

Eating in Virpazar

If you want to try some local food in some of the restaurants, then our suggestion are carp, trout, fish soup… For breakfast, priganice  (similar to doughnuts) served with honey, cheese, or jam, is a must.

Every year in winter, Virpazar is a host of International Grape and Wine festival. This festival is usually held for a weekend in December. Many people exhibit wine and the best wine is selected at the end.
